Celtic Art by David Rankine

David Rankine doing body painting at the London Celtic Festival '98

My voyage into Celtic art began while at art school (York University), albeit surreptitiously as Celtic art was viewed as a decorative art form.  I sensed right away that there was more to it.

At that time, I was already immersed in Celtic music and dance and to me the intricate patterning, rhythm within rhythm, and sense of fluid circular movement made sense to me.

After a number of years of painting in the Celtic style, I came to realize that the "controlled chaos" apparent in Celtic art reflects the Celtic world view - that of constant change, the interconnected and interdependent nature of all life, and matter, and the transmutability of form, matter and energy.
