The art of the Celts has, in recent times, experienced a resurgence in
popularity after dying out 1000 years ago. Examples of this ancient art form have survived on carved stone, jewellery, metalwork and illuminated
manuscripts. One such artifact, the Book of Kells, is looked at as one of the finest illuminated Celtic manuscripts
in existence. It was probably produced by the monks at St. Columcille's Monastery, circa 800 A.D., on the remote island of Iona, off
the west coast of Scotland. With repeated raids from the Vikings, the monks fled Iona for the safety of Kells in 806 AD, taking their
masterpiece with them. The book was given to Trinity College in the 17th century and has been on display since the 19th century.
