Greek philosopher and traveller, Poseidonius (c.135-51 B.C.) acquired
first-hand knowledge of the Celts when he visited southern Gaul early in
the 1st century BC. When describing the Celts' extravagant taste in
jewellery, he wrote: "...They accumulate large quantities of gold
and use it for personal ornament, men as well as women. They wear
bracelets on wrists and arms, and around their necks thick rings of
gold..."
