Conversion to Christianity in Britain and Ireland during the 5th and 6th centuries was achieved through the efforts of missionaries such as St. Columba, St. Patrick and St. Ninian. The church in Britain and Ireland was comprised of a group of monastic communities which enjoyed an unusual degree of independence from Rome. Some of these notable communities were in Iona, Durrow, Lindisfarne, and Kells. Artifacts from this era make up some of the most beautiful and intricate examples of the skills of the Celtic cultures.
